HELLO

I’m Ruby. I was born in the North of England and now reside across the border in Glasgow.

(Not Glasgow)

I hold a BA Hons in Textile Design from the Glasgow School of Art. When the pandemic disrupted my final year of studies, I turned to Pointcarre to create digital simulations of my woven textile designs and collaborated with 3D designers to place the work within gallery and fashion contexts.

This kick-started an interest in digital design. Giving me a sense of freedom to create, without concerns of waste. One of my main career motivators is that I want to create positive sustainable changes, in an industry that is rightfully criticised for it’s destruction of the environment.

Whilst project managing the website redesign for a whisky brand, I was introduced to UX design. I reflected on the similarites in process of UX and textiles; periods of research, design, prototyping, and testing. I love to learn, so studied at the UX Design Institute to gain a Professional Diploma in UX Design whilst working.

I’m currently working as a freelance Design & Communications Manager. I work with Bard Scotland, a shop and gallery championing Scottish design, and Glasgow Film, a funding and training organisation for filmmakers. I produce graphics for digital and print, animate, write copy, and coordinate photoshoots. To build communication strategies on web, email, social media and events.

I also volunteer with Smart Works. A charity which provides women with coaching and clothes to secure employment. I’m a stylist, and work with clients to select an outfit for their interview. I also assist with the wardrobe; by sorting donations, performing quality control, and mending items. I attend training adjacent to the service such as; trans awareness, death literacy, and menopause.

My textile practice currently consists of an ongoing collaboration with Erin Thomson, a creative technologist. In 2023, we exhibited ‘Sonic Scrims’, an interactive textile series. I have a counterbalance floor loom in my home studio which I use to produce samples and lengths, using deadstock yarn in the majority of my work, sourced from UK mills.

I am currently focusing my job search on woven textiles, and open to relocating across the UK for the right role.
